In an interview with Star News, Deputy Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis discussed the new developments for Hellenic Train and the expected timeline following the agreement announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. According to Kyranakis, the concession agreement between TRAINOSE and Italy’s state railway company during the SYRIZA government did not include any provisions for new trains or additional improvements. He emphasized that they worked methodically with Mr. Staiouras to bring in the new trains. Regarding timelines, Kyranakis initially stated that the trains would arrive as soon as the order is signed but later referenced the Prime Minister’s statement that delivery would occur by 2027. The so-called ‘silver arrows,’ which were 35 years old, resulted in 1.7 malfunctions per day, highlighting the need for modern replacements. The ECTS automatic train protection system will be installed in all new trains but not retrofitted into older ones. Parallel efforts are underway to install remote control systems across the entire network, increasing its capacity. Kyranakis also mentioned bringing modern training equipment for railway personnel. Concerning costs, Italians will spend €360 million, while Greece will invest €400 million, primarily for network restoration due to storm Daniel damages. Additionally, measures against theft include systematic patrols, drone surveillance, direct police calls, stricter legal frameworks, and fencing projects, especially in areas prone to train stone-throwing incidents.
