Depression as a medical term describes a long-term intense state of grief and…
melancholy and should not be confused with the normal negative emotional reactions. It affects people of all ages, but the way that manifests itself in children and adolescents differs partly from the symptoms of adults. In adults, depression usually manifests itself in withdrawal and catatonia, while in the minors with anger, tension and irrational outbursts (irritability). This is the main, but not the only, reason why sometimes the adults (parents, teachers) find it difficult to recognize successfully the symptoms of depression. Some parents find it difficult to accept that their child presents with depression, while some others (parents, teachers) perceive the emotional disorders that presents as a transient or reactive to an event. Are reasonable concerns of a parent or teacher, but it is equally important to raise awareness and to inform them about the recognition of the symptoms of depression and for easier and more effective search assistance.
But what are the causes of depression? Depression can be caused by the interaction of many factors. Some of them is the malfunction of brain chemicals (serotonin), genetic predisposition (a family history of the disease) and environmental factors (e.g. divorce of parents, change of school environment, emotional deprivation, neglect, abuse, loss of a loved one, chronic condition, etc.), while connected and with the parallel existence of learning difficulties and disorders of conduct.
In childhood, manifested by expression of στενάχωρων emotions (sadness, despair, anxiety, guilt, feelings of personal worthlessness, lack of concentration, decreased school performance, irritable mood (suddenly intense bouts of anger), and appearance of somatic symptoms (physical fatigue, lack of energy, headache and pains in the belly). In adolescence, manifested in addition to boredom, apathy for the interesting and favorite extra-curricular activities, social withdrawal, low self-esteem, changes in sleep (hypersomnia or insomnia) and diet (excessive or greatly reduced consumption of food), as well as with suicidal tendencies. Especially the latter are particularly serious and require immediate attention. Need always be given due attention in a comment to the child about suicidal thoughts and should not be considered as an exaggeration.
In the event that a parent becomes aware or suspects that possibly the child has depressive feelings or behaviors, it is important to turn to a specialist for early diagnosis and treatment.
