On 7 May, the contract for constructing the new 150/20 kV Keratea Distribution Centre was signed, the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDHE) announced today. DEDDHE is co-managing the project with the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE), Greece’s national transmission system operator.

Strengthening the Grid in Southeast Attica

The project is expected to significantly relieve existing substations across southeast Attica — particularly those in Markopoulo, Varkiza and Lavrio — enhancing power supply reliability for a broad geographic zone. This includes the Keratea Industrial Park (BIO.PA Keratea), as well as residential and commercial areas such as Kalyvia, Lagonas, Porto Rafti and Lavrio.

Meeting Rising Energy Demand

DEDDHE highlighted the project’s strategic importance amid growing energy demands driven by major new investments in the region. These include the Lavrio Technological-Cultural Park, planned data centres in southeast Attica, and shore-side electricity supply systems (‘cold ironing’) at Lavrio Port — all requiring robust, modern grid infrastructure.

Technical Scope of the Keratea Centre

The Keratea facility will have a total capacity of 150 MVA and feature three power transformers, each rated at 40/50 MVA. It will house a compact, indoor-type substation equipped with high-voltage GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear) technology.

In parallel, the Keratea interconnection point and a double-circuit 150 kV XLPE cable line will be built. This line will connect the new distribution centre to the existing Lavrio and Markopoulo substations, ensuring stable and resilient power supply.

Timeline and Funding

Completion is scheduled for the second half of 2028. The contractor for the project is GEK Terna, a leading Greek construction and infrastructure company. Funding comes from Greece’s Modernisation Fund, supporting national efforts to upgrade and future-proof the country’s energy infrastructure — delivering a more reliable and resilient electricity network, as DEDDHE emphasised in its announcement.
