The legendary comedy Daddies with Rum, written by Thanasis Papathanasiou and Michalis Reppas, triumphantly returns for its fifth consecutive year at Athens’ Alice Theatre—opening Thursday, October 1.
A Satire That Still Stings
Thirty years after its premiere at the same venue in 1996, the play remains as sharp and unsettling as ever. Its caustic, ironic humour continues to provoke audiences—and the 300,000 spectators who attended over the past four years bear witness to its enduring resonance.
At its core, Daddies with Rum is a biting satire of Greek society: one that, even today, remains tragically larger than life—yet smaller in conduct, greedy, racist, and offensive in countless ways. Much has changed since 1996: a new millennium dawned, digital platforms exploded, life priorities were redefined, and chaos became commonplace. The long-sought shift in class identity brought not prosperity but damage—homes shuttered, small businesses collapsed under corporate chains, and hollow authorities remained stubbornly in place—perhaps even more corrupt than before.
The phrase ‘crisis of conscience’ rarely surfaces anymore. Only ‘crisis’ remains—stripped of reflection, stripped of responsibility.
Characters Who Walk Among Us
The story follows five foolish, wretched, and desperate characters—Roi, Veskas, Panagiotis, Tzene, Christos, and Mrs. Vasou—whose fictional absurdity has long bled into reality. They’re no longer just figures on stage; they’ve stepped off the page and into everyday life. We meet them, greet them—even trust them—unaware of what might be simmering behind closed doors.
So what do these hapless schemers do at the Alice Theatre? They serve up a deliciously toxic version of Daddies with Rum: laced with poison—and whoever fate chooses, falls.
The late patriarch—who once won €4 million in the lottery—has passed away, leaving his fortune unclaimed. Two sons, two daughters-in-law, a nosy neighbour who claims omniscience, and a terrifying nurse gather under one roof. They talk, quarrel, plot, and sleep soundly—all while weaving a sweet, sinister plan of mutual destruction.
Daddies with Rum 2026! Who will survive to inherit the estate? That remains to be seen.
