Cyprus: Shipwreck Claims 7 Migrant Lives with Many Still Missing

The death toll has risen to seven from the shipwreck near Cyprus, according to reports by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA). The wreck of the migrant vessel was located around 1 PM (17.03.2025) in an area 30 nautical miles southeast of Cape Greco, within the Search and Rescue Responsibility Zone (FIR Nicosia) but outside Cyprus territorial waters. So far, seven bodies have been recovered along with two survivors out of the 20 or more migrants believed to have been onboard. In an earlier statement, the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) mentioned that the ongoing operation is coordinated by MRCC, involving a naval ship, a helicopter, and an unmanned aircraft from the Government Establishment for Emergency Management, four boats from the Harbor and Maritime Police, a police helicopter, paramedics from the Public Ambulance Service, and personnel from the Cyprus Police.
