Television networks are gearing up for the next season with a strong focus on domestic fiction — a shift driven in large part by substantial funding from the Hellenic Film Centre, the Audiovisual Media and Creative Industries Authority. But beyond scripted series, a new draft law currently under public consultation proposes subsidies for other types of programming: cultural, educational, or entertainment content — broadly defined and lacking clear quality criteria.
A Vague Mandate for ‘Cultural’ TV
The legislation leans on the nebulous requirement that such programs ‘promote Greek or European culture’ — a phrase open to wide interpretation. In practice, this has led to productions like Oikogeneiakés Istories (Family Stories) or talk shows such as Cinderella Nights, both cited as examples of ‘cultural programming’ under broadcasters’ licensing obligations. Yet oversight of these commitments falls to the National Council for Radio and Television (NCRTV), an independent authority whose priorities — judging by recent activity — appear elsewhere.
ERT’s Leadership Vacuum
At the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), personnel movements are intensifying at its Agia Paraskevi headquarters. Several senior administrative posts have opened up, drawing interest from across the industry. But the most pressing question remains who will anchor the flagship ERT1 evening news bulletin — a decision reportedly drawing attention all the way to the Maximos Mansion. A government official recently met with a prominent journalist, widely understood to be an effort to persuade her to join ERT — though she currently works at another broadcaster.
Zina Koutselini’s New Morning Show on STAR
Zina Koutselini remains with STAR, which has announced a full revamp of its morning programming. The channel describes the new offering as blending social relevance, timely information, practical tips, and curated entertainment. Koutselini will host the revamped daily morning show starting with the new TV season — in a new time slot.
Production of the show’s trailer — titled First Coffee with Zina — is scheduled for next week. Joining her will be four regular co-hosts and chef Christos Moiras. STAR aims to launch the trailer across its broadcast channels shortly after filming wraps.
Meanwhile, one presenter has concluded their run on ALPHA — but has already received approval to return for the upcoming season.
