Cuba recorded a historic low temperature of 0°C on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, in the Matanzas province—adjacent to Havana—marking the coldest reading ever documented on the Caribbean island, according to the country’s meteorological institute, Insmet. The Indio Hatuey weather station confirmed the milestone, noting it was the first time freezing point had been reached on Cuban soil. This shatters the previous national record of 0.6°C set in 1996 in Mayarí, near Matanzas. Meteorologists reported frost damage to crops in the area—an extremely rare occurrence in Cuba’s tropical climate. The unprecedented cold snap is attributed to an intense cold front originating from North America, carrying polar air into the Caribbean. Meanwhile, parts of the U.S., including Florida—just 150 km from Cuba—experienced extreme winter conditions: widespread power outages, flight disruptions, dozens of fatalities, and even frozen iguanas falling from trees due to cold-induced paralysis.
