Cryptocurrency Investment Scam Unraveled: Over €14.5M in Illegal Gains

Greek police have dismantled an international criminal organization that defrauded citizens for years through fake cryptocurrency investment schemes. Using deceptive promises of ‘guaranteed’ and high returns, the group convinced victims to invest money in non-existent digital projects — all part of a carefully orchestrated fraud.

Massive Fraud Exposed in Coordinated Raids

The operation came to light following a large-scale, coordinated police action across Crete, Attica, and Igoumenitsa on the morning of March 5, 2026. A total of 12 suspects were arrested during the raids. Six additional individuals are named in the case file, including two confirmed members of the network.

Ponzi-Style Scheme with False Legitimacy

Investigators revealed the group operated a classic pyramid (Ponzi) scheme: funds from new investors were used to pay fictitious returns to earlier participants — creating a false impression of profitability and sustainability. To lend credibility to their scam, the perpetrators set up seemingly legitimate corporate structures and online platforms, while promoting worthless digital tokens with no real market value or underlying asset.

The organization reportedly began its activities as early as 2019 and targeted victims both within Greece and abroad, leveraging cross-border financial flows and international connections. Authorities estimate the illegal proceeds exceed €14.5 million.

Charges Filed Against Suspects

Prosecutors have filed charges against the suspects for multiple offenses, including participation in a criminal organization, aggravated fraud, money laundering, unlicensed provision of cryptocurrency services, concealment of assets to evade bankruptcy proceedings, and violations of firearms legislation.

The investigation was launched after intelligence gathering and evidence consolidation, which were submitted to the competent prosecutor’s office — leading to the authorization of a preliminary inquiry. Police emphasized that the suspects exploited victims’ limited understanding of blockchain technology and digital assets to perpetrate the fraud.
