New evidence has emerged in the so-called ‘Crete mafia’ case, drawn from the official investigation file — which includes witness statements and recorded phone conversations allegedly revealing how the accused toxicologist and forensic doctor operated.
Forensic Doctor and Toxicologist to Face Interrogation
The two professionals — accused of falsifying results in forensic autopsy reports and toxicology tests — are scheduled to appear before the investigating magistrate on Monday, 26 July 2026, to give their formal statements.
Alleged Bribery in a Workplace Accident Report
Among the witness testimonies in the file is one describing how the forensic doctor reportedly demanded money to complete a report on a workplace accident. According to the statement: ‘The report couldn’t be finalized because the forensic doctor kept sending messages asking for payment. Specifically, he sent a message requesting “two purple notes tonight, and ten in total — for both of us.” When our lawyer delayed replying or refused to pay anything, the pressure intensified.’
Narcotics Case Suspect Claims He Paid to Alter Test Results
The file also includes testimony from a defendant in a narcotics case who claims he paid €2,500 to change his toxicology test results. He stated: ‘Realising how serious the situation was, I paid money — about €2,500 — to alter the report. Since I was in prison at the time, my parents delivered the cash to the doctor who conducted the tests in Heraklion. I don’t know further details about how the money was handed over. With that altered report, multiple charges were dropped in court, and I received only a minor prison sentence.’
Recorded Conversations Raise Serious Concerns
Authorities have included several intercepted calls in the file — some of which point directly to collusion between the toxicologist and legal representatives.
In one conversation, the toxicologist asks a lawyer to send him a pre-written text to insert into an expert opinion report:
Toxicologist: ‘So yes — in the meantime, I’m waiting for your revisions.’
Lawyer: ‘Yes, yes — I’ll send you a polished text, which you can then edit.’
Toxicologist: ‘Yes.’
In another call, the toxicologist appears to direct how payment should be transferred:
Lawyer: ‘The money will be here tomorrow morning — I assure you.’
Toxicologist: ‘You should’ve brought it already.’
Lawyer: ‘Would you like me to deposit it into your account?’
Toxicologist: ‘You can deposit it into hers… You know what will happen. Deposit it today into her account…’
These recordings form part of the official dossier compiled by Greek authorities and are currently under judicial review. Both defendants are expected to present their explanations during their upcoming interrogations.
