Cracks in Heraklion’s Boutes: The Four Scenarios Scientists Are Examining

in

A state of emergency has been declared in the municipal community of Boutes, Heraklion, after cracks appeared on roads and homes in the area over the past 24 hours. The phenomenon continues to evolve, with more homes in Boutes, Heraklion, revealing cracks. Engineers are conducting inspections and do not rule out the possibility of additional homes being affected. Families whose homes have been marked as ‘yellow’ for now seem unwilling to abandon their village. Following warnings from engineers, they are staying with relatives and friends, wanting to remain close to their property. Some even insist on staying inside, fearing further damage. The municipality of Heraklion has not received any requests for accommodation but is prepared to provide shelter if needed. Scientists are examining four scenarios regarding the cause of the cracks. These include ground subsidence, ground elevation, extensive water leakage, and differential subsidence where the ground sinks unevenly. Early inspections were conducted by the president of the Permanent Special Scientific Committee for Seismic Risk Assessment, Euthymios Lekkas, and results are expected soon. Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos stated that nine buildings have been marked yellow (repairable structures) and families are being relocated accordingly. Further assessments will determine the next steps based on findings.
