At the age of 85, Costas Zouganellis, an iconic figure who put Mykonos on the global map, has passed away. In 1965, this visionary entrepreneur opened the legendary ‘9 Muses’ nightclub in Mykonos, which became a meeting point for the international jet set and Greek celebrities alike. From Sophia Loren to Jacqueline Kennedy, many famous personalities enjoyed their time there. Born in Piraeus in 1940, Zouganellis first visited Mykonos at the age of 18 and was immediately captivated by the island. Known as the ‘bohemian’ of Mykonos, he befriended numerous famous individuals such as Paul Newman, Maurice Béjart, Aristotle Onassis, and Stavros Niarchos. He married twice, established stores in Athens, and spent his later summers enjoying his home in Agios Sostis with his children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, Zouganellis had been hospitalized since Easter due to severe respiratory issues.
