COSMOTE TELEKOM has deployed a standalone (SA) 5G private mobile network at the Areteio University Hospital—part of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)—as part of the 5G-SHEAL project. The initiative, titled “Surgical Planning with Holograms and Educational Streaming via 5G for Areteio Hospital,” targets three key areas: operating theatres, the hospital’s Education Centre, and its Radiology–Radiotherapy departments.

Enabling Advanced Medical Capabilities

The new private 5G SA network supports high-precision surgical planning using real-time 3D imaging, remote medical training, and live telemedicine services to underserved or remote regions. COSMOTE TELEKOM built an independent 5G infrastructure—including ultra-high-speed connectivity essential for cloud-based virtual reality (VR) applications—and implemented a dedicated application monitoring platform.

This private network delivers ultra-low latency, high bandwidth, exceptional reliability, and large-scale device capacity—critical for mission-critical hospital operations. Authorized users—including doctors, nurses, and trainees—as well as advanced devices such as VR/AR glasses and smart terminals equipped with custom SIM cards, are securely connected to the network.

A Leap into Digital Healthcare

“At COSMOTE TELEKOM, our private mobile networks deliver trusted, end-to-end cutting-edge solutions to strategic sectors like healthcare,” said Lykourgos Antonopoulos, Chief Commercial Officer of the Business Segment at the OTE Group. “This pioneering 5G SA network brings the Areteio University Hospital into the new digital era—enhancing patient care and, ultimately, improving quality of life.”

Beyond Connectivity: A Smart Health & Environment Ecosystem

The 5G-SHEAL project goes further than high-performance connectivity. It is developing an integrated digital health and environmental management ecosystem that combines:

  • Real-time telemedicine and secure, instantaneous exchange of medical data;
  • Collaboration tools for healthcare professionals;
  • Environmental monitoring—including air and water quality, and electricity consumption.

Through these digital tools, clinicians gain instant access to critical diagnostic information and imaging data—regardless of their physical location—supporting faster, more accurate clinical decisions and seamless collaboration across geographically dispersed medical teams.

Advanced 3D visualization, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) technologies will provide physicians with richer, more immersive insights into patient cases—improving preoperative preparation, enabling complex surgical planning, and contributing to more precise clinical decision-making.
