A significant increase in coronavirus cases is being observed — as is common every summer, however according to Professor of Pulmonology Nikos Tzanakis, the new variant causes intense sore throat and pharyngitis. Speaking on SKAI, he noted that ‘Every July, during the summer period, we usually see a rise in cases. This time it’s a new virus from the Omicron group.’ Although the variant leads to more infections, it does not currently raise epidemiological concerns or strain the healthcare system. According to Tzanakis, the main symptom of this new subvariant is a persistent and painful sore throat, referred to as ‘sore throat syndrome’ or painful pharyngitis. He advises people to be cautious, especially in social settings. Despite the surge in cases, mortality and hospitalization rates remain low. The professor also pointed out that this surge was expected due to increased social interactions, holidays, population movements, and tourism. Vulnerable groups are urged to remain particularly vigilant.
