A video documenting the moment a fire broke out in Corinthia has surfaced, showing a 57-year-old woman allegedly setting dry grass alight using an open flame. Authorities arrested her shortly after the incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, 29 June 2026, prompting an immediate response from the Hellenic Fire Service.
Fire Breaks Out Just Before 7 PM
The blaze erupted just before 7:00 p.m. near a rural area in Corinthia. Strong winds caused flames to spread rapidly across dry vegetation. According to ERT, the footage shows the woman walking toward a field of parched grass with her dog, bending down for a few seconds—and moments later, flames erupting.
Investigation Points to Deliberate Ignition
Fire service investigators believe she used a lighter or matches to start the fire. The video captures her leaving her home, approaching the field, crouching briefly, and then walking away as if nothing had happened. A still frame from the clip at the 1:23 mark highlights this sequence.
Flames quickly advanced toward nearby pine trees and residential buildings—raising serious safety concerns. However, thanks to the swift deployment of firefighting units and assistance from local residents, the fire was brought under control before it could escalate further.
Damage Limited, Suspect Denies Charges
The fire consumed approximately three stremmata (about 0.75 acres) of dry grassland. No forested land or homes were damaged. The woman denies responsibility and appeared before the investigating magistrate, where she was granted time to prepare her formal statement. Her lawyer stated that she lives directly opposite the plot in question and claims she bent down because an object had fallen.
