Corfu Hit by Tornado in Afionas Village Amid Severe Weather

Corfu found itself at the epicenter of severe weather late on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, as storm-force winds swept across the island. A tornado struck Afionas village in northwestern Corfu, causing extensive damage. Approximately five businesses suffered damage, including torn awnings and collapsed wooden pergolas, while several residential roofs were also affected. Fire Service units and a Civil Protection team from the North Corfu Municipality rushed to the site to clear debris and restore road access. Strong winds downed branches and trees across both northern and southern parts of the island, requiring additional emergency response. Civil Protection and the Fire Service remained on high alert throughout the night. In Kavvadades, a fallen tree severed power lines, causing a prolonged blackout across much of northwestern Corfu—restored by morning. A similar two-hour outage occurred in Perivoli. Coastal traffic on Garitsa Road was halted for several hours after seawater overflowed onto the roadway due to intense winds. An Aegean Airlines flight bound for Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport was forced to take a detour to avoid thunderstorms, landing with delay. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods on Kefalonia, submerging parts of Argostoli’s coastal zone and knocking out municipal lighting. Ships remain docked in Zakynthos and Kefalonia ports due to adverse weather conditions.
