A series of aftershocks have continued in the aftermath of the powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck on April 23 in the Marmara Sea, off the coast near Silivri. The latest tremors caused new anxiety among residents, especially in the western suburbs of Constantinople. The focal depth of the quake was measured at 7.01 kilometers. This followed an earlier tremor of 3.5 magnitude at 20:21, with two more quakes registering magnitudes of 3.5 and 3.7. The epicenter of the 3.5-magnitude quake at 21:06 was recorded at a focal depth of 15.23 kilometers, 17.56 kilometers offshore near the area of Büyükciftlik, west of Constantinople. The second quake, measuring 3.7 in magnitude at 21:07, occurred in the Marmara Sea, 19.88 kilometers offshore from Büyükciftlik, at a focal depth of 7.2 kilometers. Geology professor Ovgun Ahmet Ertugan expressed concern as the seismic sequence appears to be moving eastward toward the segment of the fault that did not rupture during the major 6.2-magnitude quake on April 23 and is closer to central Constantinople.
