Complete Blackout Hits Puerto Rico – Entire Caribbean Island Without Power for Hours

On April 16, 2025, the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean experienced a total power outage as all stations on the island ceased operation, leaving residents without electricity for hours. Located in the easternmost part of the Greater Antilles archipelago, Puerto Rico frequently suffers from power outages due to deteriorating infrastructure, as seen in the blackout that plunged the island into darkness on New Year’s Eve. The company Genera announced on platform X (formerly Twitter) that it is working to activate backup units while investigating the causes of the blackout. Utility provider LUMA Energy reported that the failure occurred around 12:40 PM local time (7:40 PM in Greece) and had not been restored nearly two hours later. Governor Jenniffer González stated, “We will provide updates as more information becomes available regarding the cause of the outage and the estimated restoration time.”
