Commission: French Commissioner Thierry Breton resigned with a “spin” to Ursula von der Leien

His resignation was submitted today, Monday (16.09.2024) by the French Commissioner for the Internal Market, publishing a photo of his letter of resignation to the President of the Commission. Thierry Breton’s surprise resignation comes just one day before the presentation of the new structure and composition of the Commission by Ursula von der Leien. This is a “harm” move towards Ursula von der Leien – which will normally be present tomorrow at the conference of the Presidents of the European Parliament in Brussels – in order to discuss the structure of commissioners, as Breton was a new French candidate for the commissioner position. I would like to express my Deepest Gratitude to my colleagues in the College, Commission services, MEPs, Member States, and my team. Together, we have worked tirelessly to advance an ambient EU agency. It has been an honor & privatee to serve the common European interest In today’s letter – published a while ago by Breton himself on former Twitter, received by the President of the Commission, the French commissioner claims that Ursula von der Lyen pressured French President Macron to submit another candidate to replace him. She also reports she learned “just a few days ago” that this move was made by von der Leien at the time, which seems to complete the final details around her new team. “A few days ago, in the final line of negotiations on the composition of the future College, you asked France to withdraw my name – for personal reasons that you did not in any way discuss directly with me,” Breton wrote in a letter to von der Leien, which he retired to X.
