Cold Front Brings Winter-Like Temperatures and Snow in April – Spring Returns by Holy Week

The weather forecast takes a dramatic turn starting Sunday, April 6, 2025. Despite spring officially arriving, the weather over the next few days will feel more like winter, with clouds, storms, and even snowfall expected. The question on everyone’s mind is whether these severe weather conditions will persist into Holy Week. Panagiotis Giannopoulos provided his prediction for the weather up to that time in an interview with newsit.gr, explaining when thunderstorms and snowfall could occur in the coming days. On Sunday, April 6, the day will start with mild spring-like weather. In Athens, temperatures will reach 20°C, with similar conditions expected across Northern Greece in the morning. However, by midday, a cold front is expected to cross the northern borders, bringing rain to northern regions in the afternoon. As Sunday night progresses toward Monday, temperatures will drop sharply, with snowfall possible not only in mountainous areas but also in urban areas such as Florina, Kastoria, and Kozani. By Monday morning, snow may fall in other regions, including Serres, Drama, and the mountains around Thessaloniki. On Monday, April 7, the weather will be wintry. In Thessaloniki, temperatures won’t exceed 9-10°C, marking a significant temperature drop. In Athens, rains are expected in the afternoon, with noticeable cooling to 14-15°C at midday. Temperatures will remain below average until Friday. By Tuesday, April 8, weather phenomena will gradually weaken, though low temperatures will persist. Local showers may occur in Crete in the morning, while intermittent snow may linger in semi-mountainous areas of Northern Greece. After April 12, temperatures are expected to rise, with the weather gradually returning to normal levels during Holy Week. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service issued an Emergency Weather Alert earlier in the day, predicting when and how intense weather phenomena will occur. According to the bulletin, worsening weather conditions are expected from Sunday afternoon, with locally heavy rains and storms, noticeable temperature drops, and temporary dense snowfall in mountainous areas as well as central and northern semi-mountainous regions.
