Christos Spirtzis, the first alternate on SYRIZA’s candidate list for the Eastern Attica A electoral district, formally declined to assume the parliamentary seat vacated by Giorgos Karameros. In a letter sent Monday, July 13, 2026, to Nikitas Kaklamanis, Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Spirtzis confirmed his decision not to take up the mandate.

A Matter of Political Principle

In his letter, Spirtzis cited fundamental disagreements with SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance (SYRIZA-PS), under whose banner he ran in the most recent elections, as well as broader considerations of political integrity. “My disagreements with SYRIZA–PS and the political dignity we are all obliged to uphold do not allow me to accept the parliamentary seat for Eastern Attica,” he wrote.

Next in Line — But Not a Party Member

With Spirtzis declining the seat, the next candidate in line is Myrto Korovesi, the second alternate on the same SYRIZA list. However, Korovesi is no longer a member of SYRIZA.
