Christopher Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’ Filming in Messinia: Tom Holland and Lupita Nyong’o at Methoni Castle

The filming of Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic production ‘Odyssey,’ starring Matt Damon, continues at the historic Methoni Castle in Messinia. Since early yesterday morning (March 12, 2025), the area has been bustling with activity as over 100 extras and cast members descended upon the region. With a budget estimated at $250 million, the film employs special effects while maintaining authenticity through period costumes. Scenes primarily shot inside Methoni Castle include those featuring Telemachus (Tom Holland) visiting King Menelaus of Sparta to gather information about his father, Odysseus. Due to strong winds, scenes involving watercraft were postponed. The Methoni sequences will last seven minutes in the final cut, with additional locations across Messinia scheduled for filming. In Kainourgio Chorio, scenes involving Tom Holland, Joe Berdahl, and Lupita Nyong’o have already taken place, while Cyclops Polyphemus scenes are set to begin in Voïdokoilia today. Lupita Nyong’o’s role remains somewhat mysterious; initially rumored to portray Athena or Calypso, it now appears she plays Clytemnestra, wife of Agamemnon. Local TikToker Dimitris Kavarnos shared insights from the set, revealing that Greek actor Liam Ireland, known from ‘Land of Olives,’ also participates in this epic project.
