Authorities on the island of Chios arrested a woman for negligently causing a fire that contributed to one of the five major wildfire fronts that ravaged the area in recent days. The suspect, a Georgian national working as a domestic helper on the island, confessed to accidentally starting the blaze. On June 23, around 10:00 AM, while in the Lepetopoda area, she reportedly extinguished her cigarette at the site where the fire later erupted. According to her statement, she attempted to stamp out the cigarette with her foot but failed to fully extinguish it. She expressed remorse for the consequences of her actions. The woman was identified after a colleague witnessed her disposing of trash near the location where the fire started.
