Chios: Battle to Remove Massive Rock That Fell on Road

National Road Chios–Kardamyla remains closed today (02.02.2026) following a dangerous landslide on Sunday, when a massive boulder crashed onto the roadway—mere meters away from passing vehicles. Local response teams have been working since the incident to remove the rock from the island’s main road. Due to its enormous size, the only viable solution is controlled demolition. Once works conclude, both traffic lanes are expected to reopen. Photographs released yesterday show the boulder landing with great force directly onto the road amid moving cars. A vehicle carrying two passengers sustained serious damage but no injuries occurred. The boulder appears to have detached suddenly from a steep mountainside and landed on the asphalt, completely blocking vehicle passage. Traffic was halted immediately to prevent further risks to drivers.
