Chios: 56-Year-Old Winter Swimmer Dies Amid Severe Weather

A tragic incident occurred on the island of Chios due to adverse weather conditions, claiming the life of a 56-year-old winter swimmer. According to ERT, the man’s wife reported him missing yesterday afternoon (1/2/2026), prompting an immediate search. The Hellenic Coast Guard located his body in the sea near Gridia Neniton on the island’s eastern coast. Three Coast Guard patrol vessels and two land units responded swiftly to the scene. Earlier that day, the national emergency number 112 had issued a severe weather alert urging residents to exercise caution. The victim was transferred to Chios port and then by EKAB ambulance to the General Hospital of Chios ‘SKYLITSEIO’, where his death was confirmed. A preliminary investigation is underway by the Central Port Authority of Chios.
