Tensions between China and the US have escalated following the trade war ignited by President Donald Trump’s global tariff policies, sparking a dramatic chain reaction in the international economy. China, one of the first countries to respond swiftly with retaliatory measures against Trump’s aggressive tariffs on American goods, has vowed today (April 8) to combat the US-imposed tariffs “until the end.” This comes after Trump threatened to impose additional 50% tariffs on the world’s second-largest economy unless Beijing withdraws its countermeasures. A representative from China’s Ministry of Commerce emphasized, “The US threat to escalate tariffs against China is adding one mistake to another… China will never accept this. If the US insists on pursuing their own path, China will fight these tariffs until the end.” Meanwhile, yesterday, President Trump directly warned China regarding American products. “If China does not rescind its 34% increase over its long-standing trade abuses by tomorrow, April 8, the United States will impose additional 50% tariffs on China, effective April 9,” Trump posted on social media. Additionally, the US president warned that “all talks with China about requested meetings will be terminated!” Conversely, “negotiations with other countries that have also requested meetings will begin immediately,” he stressed. However, it wasn’t just threats from Trump. “American tariffs on Chinese products will remain if Beijing keeps its countermeasures against Trump’s tariff offensive,” noted the White House in an official statement to the French News Agency (AFP).
