China Urges US to Abandon Golden Dome Missile Shield Amid Global Stability Concerns

The massive arms program for the construction and development of the anti-missile ‘shield’ known as ‘Golden Dome,’ announced yesterday (May 20, 2025) by Donald Trump, has sparked reactions from both China and Russia. Trump’s announcement regarding the construction of the ‘Golden Dome,’ designed to protect the U.S. from a wide range of threats, particularly intercontinental ballistic missiles from countries like China, Russia, or North Korea, caused significant concern in Beijing. In fact, Chinese officials have gone so far as to urge Washington to abandon the ‘Golden Dome’ development program immediately, arguing that it undermines global stability. The Chinese government criticized the plan as having ‘a strong offensive dimension,’ warning that it risks accelerating the militarization of space and fueling an arms race. Mao Ning, a representative of China’s Foreign Ministry, stated during a press briefing that the initiative ‘undermines strategic balance and global stability.’ Meanwhile, Moscow also expressed concerns, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov suggesting that Russia and the U.S. should resume discussions on strategic stability. Despite these concerns, President Trump emphasized the system’s capabilities at the White House, stating that once completed, the Golden Dome will be able to intercept missiles launched from anywhere on Earth or even from space. Estimated costs for this ambitious project range between $161 billion and $542 billion over two decades, according to a bipartisan Congressional service report.
