The Chinese government is convening an emergency meeting in response to the crisis triggered by escalating US trade tariffs. Under pressure from American duties, China’s leadership plans an urgent conference with top representatives from political bodies, the central bank, and regulatory authorities. According to Reuters, this meeting could take place today, focusing on measures to strengthen domestic demand and support capital markets. Representatives from the State Council, the central bank, the Ministries of Finance and Commerce, as well as financial and securities market regulators are expected to attend. This marks the first such meeting since US President Donald Trump announced high tariffs on Chinese imports last week. In a white paper addressing the new US tariffs, China stated that Beijing’s leadership will resolutely defend the rights of the People’s Republic. The country does not seek a trade war but will not stand idle while its lawful rights and interests are violated, according to state news sources. A representative of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized ‘the inalienable and legitimate right of the Chinese people to development,’ pledging strict and strong measures to protect these rights. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce declared a firm intention to counter Washington’s trade war, stating that China will decisively respond and fight until the end if the US continues its restrictive economic and trade measures. ‘There are no winners in a trade war,’ the Ministry noted, affirming that while China does not desire conflict, it will never allow harm or infringement upon the legal rights and interests of the Chinese people.
