China: Donates 2 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccine

Chinese President Xi Jinping said today that China would fight to supply two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine to other countries.

In a text message to an international forum for co-operation on COVID-19 vaccines, Xi also said China would donate $ 100 million to the global COVAX vaccine distribution facility.

China is hosting the first edition of the Virtual Forum in an effort to promote fair and equitable distribution of vaccines around the world.

Foreign Minister Xiao Lizian said in late July that China had supplied more than 700 million doses of the vaccine to other countries.

The United Nations estimates that more than 11 billion doses are needed to vaccinate 70% of the Earth’s population.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the forum that it would be the key to ending the acute phase of the pandemic.
