China has accused the European Commission of ‘discrimination’ following its February 3, 2026 announcement launching an in-depth investigation into Chinese wind turbine giant Goldwind over alleged unfair competition. The Commission expressed concern that substantial subsidies provided by Beijing to Goldwind ‘distort competition’ in the wind energy sector. This follows a preliminary probe launched in April 2024. Lin Jian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated: ‘The EU frequently resorts to unilateral trade and economic tools, applying discriminatory treatment and restrictions against Chinese enterprises.’ He described the move as protectionist, damaging the EU’s reputation and undermining confidence among Chinese firms seeking investment opportunities in Europe. Lin urged the EU to honor its market-opening commitments and respect fair competition principles. As the world’s top wind turbine manufacturer since the late 2000s, Goldwind’s rapid global expansion has triggered concerns in Western countries—including Denmark’s Vestas and the U.S.’s GE Vernova—over market destabilization caused by low-cost Chinese exports.
