A wave of resignations has hit SYRIZA-PS following the departure of Sokratis Famellos. Dionysis Kalamatianos, MP for Elis, has resigned from his post as Secretary of the party’s Parliamentary Group. In a formal letter addressed to fellow MPs, he described his decision as ‘conscious and the result of mature reflection’.
A measured resignation
In his letter, Kalamatianos reviewed his tenure, emphasizing consistency, respect for colleagues and institutions, and a steadfast commitment to cooperation and effective functioning within the Parliamentary Group. ‘During my term, I worked with dedication and absolute respect for you and for democratic institutions, always striving for consensus and efficient operation,’ he wrote. He also expressed gratitude to fellow MPs, party staff, and collaborators, calling their contribution ‘invaluable’.
He concluded the letter with a reaffirmation of shared principles: ‘We continue with the same sense of responsibility and unwavering commitment to our values and ideals.’
Tsouknidas steps down from ‘Avgi’
Separately, Lampros Tsouknidas has resigned from his position as director of Avgi tis Kyriakis (‘Sunday Dawn’), SYRIZA’s weekly newspaper. In a social media post, he explained that he assumed the role on the recommendation of Sokratis Famellos — who had recently stepped down as party president — and that he considers his own resignation ethically inevitable in light of Famellos’s departure.
‘I was invited to serve Avgi in the honorary capacity of director by SYRIZA-PS President Sokratis Famellos. With his resignation from the party presidency, I consider it ethically self-evident that I step aside,’ Tsouknidas stated. He thanked Famellos for his trust and extended best wishes to his colleagues, clarifying that he would continue working normally on the upcoming Sunday edition.
Tsouknidas submitted his resignation on Thursday evening at 9:45 p.m.
