Chania prosecutors and the investigating magistrate ordered the pre-trial detention of the 43-year-old man who confessed to murdering 45-year-old Stavroula Levendaki in Chania. The decision was announced on Friday, 26 June.

The suspect’s formal interrogation concluded shortly after 2:30 p.m. According to reports, he expressed remorse to Levendaki’s family during questioning and claimed he had no intent to kill her.

The man — a North Macedonian national and tenant of Levendaki’s apartment — appeared before the Chania public prosecutor at 11 a.m. to give his statement regarding the crime that shocked the entire country. Upon arriving at the Chania courthouse, he was met with public condemnation: bystanders shouted “scum” and “murderer,” demanding justice for Levendaki.

A Tragic Disappearance and Confession

Levendaki’s body was discovered 22 days after she went missing. The suspect admitted to the murder under police pressure, revealing he had attempted to kill her at least three times — using a wine bottle, a knife, and a heavy ashtray.
