Disturbing details have emerged about the tragic fall of a 17-year-old British teenager from the first-floor balcony of a hotel in Chalandri, a northern suburb of Athens, in the early hours of Friday, 3 July 2026.

Severe Injuries and Critical Condition

The teen sustained life-threatening injuries in the fall and is currently hospitalized at the Hellenic Red Cross Hospital. According to reports, he has been declared brain dead.

Purchase of Alcohol with Forged License

Authorities believe the minor and his friend attempted to buy alcohol from a nearby kiosk but were refused due to their age. They then used a forged driver’s license to purchase a bottle of vodka from a local mini-market.

Hotel Staff Describe the Scene

An employee at the hotel spoke to newsit.gr, describing the chaotic aftermath. She said the two teenagers had consumed large amounts of alcohol — including vodka and beer — and were severely intoxicated.

“The one who fell is the son of the family. His parents are devastated and have been at the hospital since 5 a.m.,” she said. “I started my shift at 8 a.m., but came in earlier today. From what we’ve heard, there were bottles in the room. The kids were completely out of it — the other boy was lying unconscious on the bed and had no idea what happened. He didn’t even see his friend fall.”

She added that staff suspect the teen may have gone onto the balcony to get fresh air or lost his balance. Surveillance footage from the hotel’s reception area captured the incident, and guests from rooms below also witnessed the fall.

“They’d only checked in the previous day and stayed just one night,” she continued. “The friend told us they first tried the kiosk, got turned away, then made the fake license and used it at the mini-market. I don’t know where they got the fake ID. They drank the entire bottle of vodka — neighbors said they’d also been drinking beer. It looks like they passed out, and then this tragedy occurred.”

She noted that staff did not enter the room — the teens had not granted permission — but from what she saw through the doorway, the room was in disarray, littered with empty bottles. The parents have remained at the hospital and have not returned to the hotel.
