Car License Plates: What Information Can You Discover with One Click?

Every citizen can access useful information about a vehicle through its license plate. Thanks to the digital service Open Car, interested parties can obtain significant data on all vehicles with Greek registration plates. This service is located on gov.gr, under the section ‘Citizen and Daily Life’ and the sub-section ‘Transportation.’ Alternatively, citizens can directly access the service via the provided link. After entering the vehicle’s registration number, the following information is displayed: whether the vehicle is in motion or stationary, if it has been stolen, whether it is insured or uninsured, along with the start and end dates of insurance, and the type of vehicle. However, Open Car does not provide identity details of the owners or holders of the vehicles, as these are sensitive personal data. It should be noted that the Open Car application was launched on February 15, 2022, by the Ministries of Finance and Digital Governance and the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) to serve citizens seeking information on vehicles with Greek-issued plates.
