On June 4, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the 50% tariffs imposed by U.S. President Trump on steel and aluminum as ‘illegal and unjustified.’ Canada is the leading supplier of these materials to the U.S. market. Trudeau informed reporters that ‘right now we are conducting thorough discussions’ with the Trump administration, promising a response to the tariffs which he labeled as ‘a bad idea for American workers and especially for the Canadian industry.’ At the same time, the labor union Unifor advocated for retaliatory tariffs against American steel and aluminum. In a statement, Unifor urged the federal government to act promptly to protect the manufacturing sector and counter the escalating trade aggression.
