Canada and Mexico cooperate in response to Trump tariffs

Justin Trido’s Prime Minister and Claudia Saintbaum’s president discussed the issue of imposing American tariffs during a telephone conversation, Trido’s office announced today (2.2.2025). The two leaders agreed to work together in areas of common interest and improve already strong bilateral relations between Canada and Mexico. CORVERSE It is recalled that Canada announced earlier today that it would impose a 25% duty on American products, totalling $155 billion of Canadian dollars (102 billion). This amount corresponds to one fifth of the annual American imports to Canada. Mexican President Claudia Shainbaum announced today that she instructed the Economy Minister to impose tariff and other measures against the US, to defend Mexican interests, following the White House’s announcement of duties on imports of products from her country. These duties, according to analysts, may harm the country’s exports, economic growth and currency. Mexico’s president, Claudia Shainbaum, immediately announced tariff and other measures to protect Mexican interests. The US absorbs 83% of the country’s exports, including cars, computers and agricultural products. Mexico has a large trade surplus with the US, which prompted Donald Trump to argue that America “subsidise Mexico”.
