“Campanaki” from Chania Hospital: “They reap” the incidents of drunkenness and traffic accidents – full of emergency

Shock causes data on the attendance of people due to cases of drunkenness and traffic accidents in the General. The frequent cases of drunkenness and traffic accidents in Crete appear not to intimidate irresponsible citizens. Even today, the arrest in Chania of a 54-year-old who allowed the entry and consumption of alcohol of a minor in a health care store, as well as the arrest in Thessaloniki of a 49-year-old driver who was driving under the influence of drunkenness, having his minor son as his partner. CORVERSE At the same time, data released by the WTODINE illuminate the size of the problem with the drunken incidents and traffic accidents facing the local community in Chania, Crete, and at the same time reflect the increased burden of the hospital, which already operates with significant staff shortages. According to the data, from January 2023 to December 2024, 339 people with acute drunken poisoning came to the hospital. “Most incidents were addressed in emergency and short-term hospitalization, but several needed admission for further hospitalization,” notes WTODINA President Michael Giannakos. CORVERSE Even more worrying are the evidence of road accident injuries. In the same time, 1,523 people came in with serious injuries, with many of the drivers under the influence of alcohol. In both cases, the figures show an increase between 2023 and 2024. “Car accidents are a scourge in Crete. Causes are the bad road network, drunkenness and irresponsibility. Many children, at the limits of adulthood, drive motorcycles without security measures. The result is tragic. On the occasion of the last tragic incident in Chania that he collected and killed 22-year-old Panayiotis, the data from the General Hospital of Chania in visits to people with drunken and traffic accidents scares, while the great burden on the understaffed hospital also arises. In the on-calls, they literally fill the ERs with people with acute poisoning from excessive alcohol use as well as injuries from traffic accidents. Unfortunately, there are a lot of deadly traffic. Only in the last few days have two young children aged 22 and 19 who came to hospital been lost,” the president of the WTODINE points out. Traffic and major deficiencies in Chania hospital “The hospital of Chania reminds a large hospital of Attica in number of visitors. An average of 300 patients per day are examined in the emergency room, while doctors are asked to fill gaps by making calls beyond normal, even unpaid for over a year,” notes Mr. Giannakos. The hospital operates under suffocation conditions. As the President of the WTODEN states: In the Pediatric Surgery Clinic, only one doctor serves, leading to her closure. The Pneumonological Clinic operates with only two doctors. One of the two surgical clinics is closed, as there are only two doctors left. The two Pathological Clinics are served by four doctors each. In the Emergency Department, out of the eight organic positions only three have been covered. Two of the three doctors have been detached to the clinics to fill gaps, leaving the department with just two doctors. “The situation is marginal. Fortunately, qualified doctors assist the operation of the department,” states Mr Giannakos and concludes: “The evidence we quote must be awakened. The hospital of Chania, despite the superhuman efforts of the staff, cannot respond to the volume of incidents without direct assistance to staff and resources,” concludes the president of the WTODI.
