Two people were killed and a child was lightly injured in a shooting at the Chico Branch Library in northern California. The suspect was apprehended shortly after the attack, according to local authorities.

Shooting at Butte County Library

The incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. local time at the Chico Branch Library in Chico, a city in Butte County. Police Chief Billy Aldridge described the scene during a press briefing, saying officers heard gunshots and screams before entering the building.

Upon entering, officers found the suspect fleeing through a rear exit — where he was quickly intercepted and taken into custody by responding law enforcement units.

Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation

“This incident is deeply tragic and traumatic for many members of our community,” Aldridge said. Authorities confirmed two fatalities and one minor with non-life-threatening injuries. The child was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Officials have not released further details about the suspect or motive, but indicated they believe the individual acted alone. Emergency response teams from police, fire, and medical services were deployed rapidly. Authorities stated there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active.
