California Plans Lawsuit Against Trump’s Tariffs

Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom of California is planning a lawsuit against the extensive tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. ‘The illegal tariffs by President Trump are causing chaos in families, businesses, and the economy of California – raising prices and threatening jobs,’ states a Democratic announcement cited by several American news outlets, including Politico and the Los Angeles Times. ‘We are defending American families who cannot afford to let this chaos continue.’ According to reports, the lawsuit was scheduled to be filed in federal court in California on April 16, 2025. Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta argue that tariff imposition should be approved by Congress. In Bonta’s statement, it is mentioned that the ‘chaotic and arbitrary enforcement’ of these measures is ‘not only extremely concerning but also illegal.’ California, one of the world’s largest economies on its own, sees agriculture and technology sectors particularly affected by these tariffs. Meanwhile, numerous lawsuits have been filed against Trump and his administration for various reasons, many involving California.
