“Nala” is the only one in our country that has received special education abroad to save people from drowning. With the help of a man, he took a 77-year-old man to the coast who was unconscious and had drunk enough water. The only trained dog in marine rescue, “Nala”, is a German shepherd, while its owner, George Papageorgiou, is also a lifeguard himself. On September 12, George Papageorgiou was in Kamena Vourla with his dog. With the help of “Nala”, and a friend, they took to shore the 77-year-old, who had lost consciousness as he had drunk enough water. Immediately they offered him the first aid and luckily managed to bring him back to life and deliver him to the ambulance rescuers who took him to Lamia hospital, where the elderly man is hospitalized out of danger. Greece has the sad record of the first in drowning (340 in summer 2023) and has no other dog lifeguard, when in other countries with far less drownings they have hundreds of trained dogs to save people on the coast.
