Renowned criminal lawyer Stavros Georgiou appears to have been murdered after sustaining repeated blows to the head and face. His body was discovered late on Tuesday, 21 July, at his law office in central Athens — a space he also used as a residence.
Violent Attack, No Signs of Forced Entry
Initial findings indicate the death was the result of a criminal act. According to official sources, the forensic pathologist found no wounds consistent with a sharp object or firearm. Instead, evidence points to a severe physical assault involving multiple, forceful impacts — primarily to the face and head — which likely caused his death.
Authorities are now investigating whether the injuries were inflicted by fists and kicks, or with an unknown blunt object. It is also possible that Georgiou struck furniture during the attack. Investigators are examining all potential motives and are checking whether any items went missing from the office.
Timeline of Discovery
Georgiou had not been in contact with anyone for several hours — prompting concern among family members. His 16-year-old twin daughters repeatedly tried calling him but received no response.
When their calls went unanswered, they went to his office on 3rd September Street and rang the doorbell repeatedly without success. A fellow resident heard their voices and alerted the building’s concierge. Upon opening the office door, the grim scene was revealed: Georgiou’s body was found lying in a pool of blood.
Early reports state he was discovered naked and curled in a fetal position, with his clothes scattered around the room. Notably, police observed no signs of forced entry or evidence that the office had been searched — adding further complexity to the investigation.
Georgiou’s brother arrived at the scene shortly afterward, visibly shaken. Speaking to reporters, he said he too had been searching for his sibling since midday, unable to reach him by phone.
