David Lodge of , known primarily for the novel “Little World!”, died at the age of 89, announced the publishing house representing him. “His death is a huge loss for all of us in Penguin Random House and for British letters,” the publishing house said. Author David Lodge died “quietly” on 1 January 2025 in Britain, having his family next to him. CORVERSE “We are very proud of his creations and for the pleasure that his novels offered to so many people,” his children said. Lodge was an honorary professor at the headquarters of the University of Birmingham’s Modern English Literature, a member of the Royal Society of Letters and had been named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1998. His works were translated into 24 languages. He was twice nominated for the famous Booker literary award. In his works, inspired by his own experiences at the university, he categorically described the academic world, through two representatives of this “minority of worsening puritanism”, Aglo Philip Sallow and American Morris Zap. CORVERSE His novel, “Little World!”, was part of a trilogy in which he sarcastically describes the academic environment. David Lodge was born on 28 January 1935 in Dalwich, in the suburbs of London. His father was a musician in a dance orchestra. From his depressed mother he controlled that he inherited his chronic stress, another dominant feature of his personality. He studied literature at University College, London, and in 1960 he began teaching himself at the University of Birmingham. In 1987 he retired to devote himself exclusively to writing. In his best-seller, the novel “The Treatment” (1995) describes the environment of media elites, especially television. “His contribution to literature was enormous, both through criticism, and with his iconic novels that have already become classics,” said his editor, Liz Foley. His wife, whom he met when he was 18, died in January 2022. In 2008, he explained in an interview with the Guardian that he was “probably moderate” in his life. “I stayed in the same spot. It is important that the couple have a stable life. People who divorce, remarriage, have custody of their children and everything else… It is an incredible waste of time and energy,” he said.
