The heavy snow and icy rain that plagues the whole Great caused traffic accidents, flights interruptions and closures and main roads today (05.01.2025). National Rail warned of continued interruptions, while power cuts affected many citizens of Britain. Several large airports were forced to suspend flights and close their runways, while other means of transport such as trains, faced major delays. CORVERSE John Lennon Airport, Manchester and Liverpool both closed the corridors Sunday morning due to intense snowfall – but they seemed ready to reopen “as soon as possible”. Leeds Bradford airport was also forced to close its runways Sunday morning and has not yet given an update. At the same time, extensive road closure and diversions occurred due to unsafe driving conditions, with street chaos expected to continue until rush hour Monday morning. CORVERSE National Rail said the line between Leeds and Halifax via Dewbury has been closed in both directions, with a holiday on the northern routes expected by tomorrow. London North Eastern Railway (LNER) passengers were also invited to postpone their train trips until tomorrow on the East Coast main line. At the same time, a truck closed the road to A1 Southbound after stuck in dense snow that continued to fall around it. Birmingham airport was forced to suspend its operation for several hours during the night “for reasons of cleaning snow and safety”. Bristol Airport reopened around 23:00 on Saturday, but warned of ongoing delays because the aircraft were out of position after flight cancellations. National Highways warned that up to 25 cm of snow could hit roads in northern England, including the A628 Woodhead Pass, connecting Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire through Peak District and closed during the night in both directions. In addition to snow, the National Highways warned that rain may initially fall to frozen ground and lead to ice in high ground areas, including Cotswolds and Peak District, be more at risk.
