In an alert state is now (17.09.2024) the city of Nisha, Poland, as hermetically water of rivers brought with it material causing enormous damage to cities, bridges, and homes. During the night, volunteers, rescuers, and military helicopters placed sandbags to strengthen the broken mounds around Nisha which has 400,000 inhabitants. Poland predicted 234m euros (1 billion zloty) for flood victims. The city’s zoo address requested volunteers to place sandbags to protect the area although animals remain safely away from flooded zones. Polish authorities filled 75% of a huge reservoir near the Czech border, so that the water level would fall and avoid flooding in Oder and Nisha. “More than 13,000 people have moved away from their homes,” said Czech Prime Minister Petr Fala while thousands of households both in the Czech Republic and Poland remain without electricity. In the northeastern Czech city of Ostrava, a broken dam in Oder, at its confluence with the Upava River, caused Monday flooding in the city’s industrial area. In Hungary, in the historic cities of Visegrad and Sentandre, north of Budapest, authorities have set up mobile dams preparing for flooding on the Danube. Budapest is preparing for the rising water level approaching record levels and has closed Margaret Island, a recreational area with hotels and restaurants, where tens of thousands of sandbags have been stacked to protect it.
