Global mourning has followed the news of the death of iconic Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler at the age of 75. Tyler passed away on the evening of Wednesday, 8 July 2026, in a hospital in Portugal “as a result of the illness she had been receiving treatment for,” according to a family statement.
In May, Tyler was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, for emergency intestinal surgery and subsequently placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery. Last month, her representative confirmed she had emerged from the coma but remained in intensive care with a serious health condition.
The Final London Concert
Tyler rose to international fame in 1983 with the release of her signature power ballad, Total Eclipse of the Heart. As of early 2026—43 years after its debut—the song has been streamed over one billion times on Spotify alone.
Her last live performance of the track took place in London this past March at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, during a career-spanning concert celebrating her greatest hits. In the wake of her passing, footage from that show has gone viral online, moving millions of fans around the world.
A Legacy of Anthems
Tyler dominated the 1980s with timeless ballads including Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero. One of her earliest global breakthroughs was the 1977 hit It’s a Heartache.
Her career continued to flourish internationally. In 1992, she collaborated with Greek composers Michalis Rakintzis and Sofia Arvaniti on the song Pethaino stin Erimia (The Desert Is in Your Heart), which became a massive success in Greece.
In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with Believe in Me. In 2022, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to music.
