Bonnie Tyler, the legendary Welsh singer known for timeless hits like Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, passed away at the age of 75. She died on the evening of Wednesday, 8 July 2026, in a hospital in Portugal after a prolonged illness.

A statement posted on her official website read: “The family and team of Bonnie Tyler are devastated to announce that Bonnie passed away unexpectedly last night in hospital in Portugal, as a result of the illness she had been receiving treatment for. A further announcement will follow shortly, but for now we ask for privacy as we come to terms with this tragedy.”

Tyler had been in critical condition following complications from emergency intestinal surgery in May, which led doctors to place her in an induced coma. She emerged from the coma in mid-June, but her condition remained serious and unstable. She was treated in an intensive care unit as medical teams worked to stabilise her. Portuguese media reported at the time that she suffered cardiac arrest during her first attempt to be woken from the coma. Though her condition later showed signs of improvement — with close collaborators saying doctors were ‘confident’ she would recover, albeit slowly — her health ultimately declined.

Her upcoming summer tour dates were cancelled, though organisers expressed hope that some shows might be rescheduled later in the year.

Rising to Fame in the 1980s

Tyler rose to international stardom in the early 1980s. Her 1983 power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart became a global phenomenon, followed by Holding Out for a Hero — featured in the film Footloose — which topped airplay charts across Europe and North America in 1984. That same year, she won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female, and received a second nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for Here She Comes, featured on the soundtrack of the re-released Fritz Lang classic Metropolis.

One of her earliest breakthroughs came in 1977 with It’s a Heartache. In 1992, she collaborated with Greek composers Michalis Rakintzis and Sofia Arvaniti on the hit Pethaino stin erimia (The Desert Is in Your Heart), which became a massive success in Greece.

In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with Believe in Me, finishing 19th in the final.

A Life Marked by Longevity and Loyalty

Offstage, Tyler’s personal life stood out for its rare stability in the entertainment world. She married Robert Sullivan on 14 July 1973 — a union that lasted over 52 years, making them one of the longest-married couples in global show business.
