Bolivian Football Scandal: Player Used Deceased Brother’s Identity

In an incredible turn of events from Bolivia, international Aurora player Gabriel Montaño has been exposed for competing under a false identity, having ‘stolen’ the identity of his deceased brother. Gabriel Montaño began using his brother’s identity five years ago to participate in an under-14 championship in Bolivia, despite being 19 at the time. This allowed him to build his career and reach the first division of Bolivian football, playing for Aurora. The 25-year-old player even earned a call-up to the national team before it was revealed that he is not actually 19, resulting in a two-year ban from competitive play. The punishment for Aurora was even harsher, as they must start the league with -33 points for failing to verify or possibly concealing Montaño’s true identity.
