A 27-year-old bride was killed on her wedding night in the village of Gordes near Avignon, in southeastern France, when armed men with covered faces opened fire on the guests. The 25-year-old groom and a 13-year-old child are being treated in serious condition. According to police sources cited by French media, a large-scale operation is underway to locate the perpetrators, involving dozens of police officers and a helicopter. Two suspects have been arrested. Authorities in France are now searching for a third perpetrator who managed to escape on foot after the bride was fatally shot. Prosecutor of Avignon, Florent Galtery, stated that the armed men arrived by car and, shortly after 4:30 AM local time on Sunday, attacked the guests as the newlywed couple exited the community center where the wedding reception was held. There were 28 people present in the hall at that time. Although no details about the suspects have been released to the public, French media speculate that the attack may be related to drug-related score-settling. The mayor of Gordes, Didier Perello, expressed his outrage over the incident, stating: “I am furious. We are close to some cities – I won’t name them – where, unfortunately, we have seen such incidents again.” The venue where the party took place had been reserved since March for the wedding but, as the mayor noted, by people who do not reside in the village. Giogio Molinas, owner of a local restaurant and resident of the area, told AFP that he fears this deadly attack will unjustly stigmatize the village of approximately 1,000 inhabitants. “The last major incident in the village happened 125 years ago,” he remarked, without providing further details.
