The bird flu virus was detected in a dead Dalmatian pelican in the southern part of Kerkini Lake near Lithotopos in the Regional Unit of Serres, as announced by the Directorate of Veterinary Services – Department of Animal Health and Veterinary Control, Medicines and Practices of Central Macedonia Region. The virus in the dead pelican was confirmed yesterday (05.03.2025) during an epidemiological investigation of Avian Influenza. The region emphasizes that since other cases have been confirmed in dead Dalmatian pelicans in the lakes of Mikri Prespa and Cheimaditida in Florina, biosecurity measures are necessary for poultry farms to prevent contamination. Specifically, measures outlined in a decision by the Minister of Rural Development and Food prohibit keeping poultry (domesticated, free-range, organic, etc.) in open areas within two kilometers of wetlands, rivers, lakes, and water collections, as well as in non-enclosed spaces nationwide. In areas where confinement is not mandatory, it is recommended to keep poultry in closed or covered spaces until mid-May. Safe handling rules for meat, eggs, and derivatives of farmed birds must also be followed. It is reminded that avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease requiring mandatory reporting, and owners must notify veterinary authorities immediately in cases of increased illness or mortality. Recently, there has been an increase in global incidents of transmission to mammals (e.g., deer, mink, felines). Relevant services and private entities frequently interacting with wild birds (forestry staff, hunters, wildlife rangers, ornithological organizations, care centers, management agencies, etc.) are urged to inform local veterinary authorities when finding dead or dying high-risk species or collect and deliver them, taking all necessary personal protection measures. Lastly, professionals in high-risk groups, such as veterinarians, poultry and livestock farmers, slaughterhouse workers, are advised to get vaccinated against seasonal flu to reduce the risk of recombination and emergence of a new pandemic strain.
