Biolanda: Investigations Halted Amid Propane Leak Fears After Explosion

Investigations at the Biolanda factory in Trikala have been temporarily suspended six days after a deadly explosion that killed five workers, due to fears of a new blast caused by an extensive propane leak. The leak was so severe that propane had penetrated 25 meters underground. Authorities are now reviewing all company documents and permits to determine whether facilities and equipment complied with safety regulations. Although on-site investigations are paused, technical assessments and document reviews continue to identify irregularities—such as the absence of fire protection systems in the underground area where the explosion occurred. A 24-hour strike has been announced for Tuesday in Trikala by the Federation of Milk, Food and Beverages, with a rally at 11:00 a.m. at the Trikala Workers’ Center and parallel protests outside the Ministry of Labour in Athens. Workers had reportedly smelled gas for an extended period without their concerns being heeded—leading to the fatal blast. In a recent statement, Biolanda expressed deep shock over the tragedy, emphasized full cooperation with authorities, and urged respect for victims’ memory and factual accuracy amid circulating rumors and unfounded interpretations.
