Beware of Phone Scams Using ‘Caller ID Spoofing’: What Citizens Should Know

in

Greek citizens are being warned about a new wave of phone scams using the ‘Caller ID Spoofing’ method. The scammers impersonate officials from the Cybercrime Prosecution Department or its associates to steal personal information. According to the Greek Police announcement on April 1, 2025, these criminals use the number 2144027860, which belongs to the cybercrime telephone center but does not have outgoing call capabilities. They employ VoIP services to falsify caller IDs, making it appear as though calls come from trustworthy entities while hiding their true identities. In this case, they claim to be representatives of the Cybercrime Prosecution Department and attempt to deceive people by stating there are cryptocurrency accounts in their names that can be recovered. The Greek Police advises citizens to be cautious with calls claiming to be from official organizations asking for sensitive personal or banking data. If such a call is received or suspected during a conversation, terminate it immediately and verify authenticity through official channels. Citizens should also report any attempted fraud to the police promptly. Information can be provided anonymously or named to the Cybercrime Prosecution Department via phone at 11188, email [email protected], Twitter @CyberAlertGR, gov.gr platform, or the CYBERΚΙD smartphone app.
